The Parent Visa allows parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia permanently or temporarily, depending on the visa type. There are several options available, including both non-contributory and contributory visas, each with different processing times and costs.

These visas are designed to help parents reunite with their children who have settled in Australia. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for either a temporary stay or permanent residency.

Basic Requirements

  • You must have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You must meet the Balance of Family Test (at least half of your children must live in Australia or more children must live in Australia than in any other country).
  • You must meet health and character requirements.
  • Contributory parent visas require a higher fee for faster processing, while non-contributory visas are more affordable but have longer waiting times.

Which Parent Visa Is Right for You?

  1. Parent Visa (Subclass 103)
This is a permanent visa that allows you to live in Australia indefinitely. However, due to limited places, processing times can be over 30 years.
    • Eligibility: You must meet the Balance of Family Test and be sponsored by your child.
    • Processing Time: Typically over 30 years.
    • Cost: Lower cost compared to contributory visas, but with long waiting times.
  2. Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143)
This is a permanent visa with much faster processing times compared to the Subclass 103 visa. However, it comes with a higher application fee.
    • Eligibility: You must meet the Balance of Family Test and be sponsored by your child.
    • Processing Time: Typically 4 to 6 years.
    • Cost: Significantly higher than the Subclass 103, but offers faster processing for permanent residency.
  3. Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)
This is a temporary visa that allows you to live in Australia for up to 2 years. After this period, you can apply for the permanent Subclass 143 visa. It allows you to spread out the financial cost of your visa application.
  4. Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)
This visa is for parents who are old enough to receive an Australian age pension. It allows for permanent residency, but like the non-contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 103), it has extremely long waiting times.
    • Eligibility: You must be of pension age and meet the Balance of Family Test.
    • Processing Time: Typically over 30 years.
    • Cost: Lower cost, but with a long waiting period.

The Balance of Family Test

To be eligible for most parent visas, you need to meet the Balance of Family Test. This test requires that either:

  • At least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or
  • More of your children live in Australia than any other country.

Understanding whether you meet this requirement is critical to applying for a parent visa.
